Despite the poster showing us a zombie, FTWD will not have the same types of zombies as TWD. The show does not bring up the cause of the outbreak; instead it begins when Rick is in his coma, so we get a chance to see the early stages of the outbreak. The zombies won’t be called walkers yet and they won’t be full zombie, since they will have just become zombies. As such, we will get to see various stages of decomposition.
The look and feel will be different from what we are used to seeing on TWD. Aesthetically, the tone will feel different as Fear The Walking Dead is going to be shot in a digital format and TWD is shot on film.
Robert Kirkman has stated that the timelines will overlap, and some of the episodes will occur during TWD’s season 2 or 3 timeline. While you don’t need to watch one show to watch the other, they are both set in the same universe, so why wouldn’t you? Additionally, the mythology in both shows is the same, so watching the new spinoff will, in many ways, help us to understand The Walking Dead better.
Based on the six-episode order, it’s safe to assume that when Fear the Walking Dead begins in August it will end right around the time The Walking Dead begins. This is a smart move, as it gets viewers acclimated to the show, and should they order more episodes or when they move into the next season, if they air them concurrently, viewers will have a good idea of what to expect.
Chaos will be the name of the game according to Kirkman. On the new show, he had this to say:
“There’s probably going to be more chaos in the first season [of the companion series] and moving into the second season just because we are going to watch civilization crumble. There is a tremendous amount going on, and the story is going to move very quickly, so I anticipate Fear the Walking Dead is going to be more hectic than the first season of The Walking Dead”
