You might assume that character would be Rick, because he is the protagonist, or Daryl, because he’s the biggest badass and a super fan-favorite, but you’d be wrong on both counts. You can also forget Carl or Little Ass Kicker, because apparently kids are on the table in this apocalypse (and well, we’ve seen Kirkman kill them before). So, who do you think Kirkman feels so passionately about keeping around that he would announce it to an entire group at Madison Square Garden?
If you said Carol, you’d be right.
It seems the reason for this is that the Carol on the show, played by the insanely talented Melissa McBride, is a much better character than the Carol of the comics, who often appears broken by the apocalypse.
According to Kirkman:
The Carol that’s in the comic was my attempt to show just how broken an individual can become from the zombie apocalypse. The Carol in the show, which is a much better character let’s be honest, actually is made stronger by all the more horrible things that happen to her in the show. Killing her would definitely not … we can’t do that.Carol on the show started off as a battered woman. Through the seasons she has endured a number of changes, including losing her abusive husband and her only daughter in horrible ways. However, unlike the Carol of the comics, McBride (and Kirkman) has allowed Carol to become a hardened soldier in the apocalypse. In many cases, Carol is more calculated than Rick. She is never afraid of doing what needs to be done to protect the people that have become like a family to her, no matter the cost.
That said, Kirkman could be blowing smoke and just telling this to fans so that if she dies, it is one of those shocking TV moments that shows live for. It seems surprising that he would tell everyone Carol is the only safe character when so many times before he’s told us that no one is safe.
What do you think? Is Carol untouchable or is this all just a hoax for future storylines?
